What is a Microprocessor?

  • A digital electronic component
  • Has transistors
  • Has a single semiconductor integrated circuit (IC)
  • 1+ microprocessors serve as a central processing unit

The Beginning

  • Invented in 1971 by Ted Hoff
  • Also known as- Intel 4004
  • Effect on Computers
    • Faster
    • Smaller
    • Less expensive

  • Zilog
  • Motorola
  • Texas Instruments

Intel 4004

  • Name: Intel 4004 microprocessor
  • Size: only 1/8" by 1/16"-smaller than a cornflake
  • 2,300 vacuum tubes on one chip
  • Can perform 66,000 instructions per second
  • Followed by the 8008:
    • First commercial 8-bit microprocessor
  • After the 8008 was the 8080

Motorola

  • Time: 1974
  • Name: 6800 8-bit microprocessor
  • A few months later Motorola created the 6502
    • Used in the Apple II
    • Commodore personal computer systems also used this microprocessor

Zilog

  • Time: 1976
  • Name: Z80 microprocessor
    • It was an enhanced 8080 microprocessor
    • Used in many early computers

CPU's Today

  • Key component of all types of computers
  • Intel is the world leading CPU manufacturer
