What is folksonomy?
is the result of personal free tagging of information and objects. The tagging is done in a social enviroment. The value in this external tagging is derived from people using their own vocabulary and adding explicit meaning, which may come from inferred understanding of the information/object as well. It refers to the collaborative but unsophisticated way in which information is being catorized on the web.
How does it work?
Folksonomy works by tagging. It tags pictures or pages that you want to remember later. Web sites like
provide central places where you can tag and then post it so that other people can tag onto what you posted.
Why would anyone want to do this?
People who want to share a set of interesting links for free with other people.
Who uses it?
Folksonomies are user-generated and therefore inexpensive to implement, advocates of folksonomy believe that it provides a useful low-cost alternative to more traditional, institutionality supported taxonomies or controlled vocabularies. An employeed-generated folksonomy could be seen as a "emergent enterprise taxonomy". Some folkonomy advocates believe that it is useful in facilitating workplace democracy and the distribution of management tasks among people actually doing the work.
When was the term invented?
It was invented in 2003 by combining the words folks and taxonomy.
